Sustainable timber product used to create carbon negative window frames

Looking for a durable wood product that can actually be carbon positive?

Turn your search to Accoya wood. Made with Accsys Technologies’ proprietary acetylation process, Accoya wood has Class 1 durability, is guaranteed for 25 years and has dimensional stability that sees swelling and shrinkage reduced by 75% and more compared to other wood products.

At Greenbuild 2014, Bryan Crennell, director of sales and marketing at Accsys Technologies, discussed Accoya wood's unique properties for building exteriors, furniture, window frames and other uses.

Exceeding the high-quality and aesthetic attributes of tropical hardwoods, Accoya  boasts excellent environmental credentials; it is sourced from FSC certified forests and certified at Gold level by the Cradle-to-Cradle Products Innovation Institute, Crennell noted.

Accoya received one of the Netherland's most important environmental certificates for the third year in a row by Dutch environmental accreditation scheme DUBOkeur, which is managed by the Dutch Institute for Building Biology and Ecology (NIBE).

2013 saw NIBE significantly raise its standard of assessment for construction products, meaning that products awarded certification had to demonstrate a much higher level of environmental performance to be recognised.

After a full Life Cycle Assessment of the frames by NIBE, Accoya received the DUBOkeur certification by demonstrating that it was an environmentally benign product. The assessment rated 18 different eco-indicators to determine if accreditation should be awarded, including exploring Accoya’s carbon footprint, land use, toxicity and depletion of resources.

During the DUBOkeur assessment, researchers were especially impressed by the increased expected lifespan of Accoya window frames, from 50 to 70 years, based on recent studies by TRADA. This, combined with a low coating frequency of 12-15 years, makes Accoya window frames the most sustainable in their class.

“After our recent carbon footprint research showing that Accoya windows are carbon negative over their full life cycle, this is another boost supporting the superior environmental performance of Accoya," Crennell said. "The Dutch building industry increasingly wants both durable and sustainable products, and we hope that this award shows the industry that Accoya should be the material of choice to meet the demands of today’s construction projects.”
