Demand, research drive ERV, HRV development

Zehnder long has been a leader in the mechanical ventilation field, helping improve the indoor air quality for both residential and commercial environments.

Continued demand by consumers for new, efficient ways to optimize air quality drives how the company develops its latest and future product lines, Ray Bolger, general manager for Zehnder America, said at AHR Expo 2018.

Zehnder also uses research on the benefits of good indoor air to determine what components those units should include and how they should function within an application.

“It’s not just about energy efficiency, it’s also the comfort and health these systems provide,” Bolger said.

Energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) and heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) – the key parts of Zehnder’s Comfosystems line – are becoming more commonplace in structural HVAC systems, particularly as homes and building envelopes become tighter.

Tighter envelopes “are a natural way things are being done these days,” Bolger said. “Our units are applicable in those situations. … There’s more conscious effort in construction in general to make more efficient buildings. That’s where we come in and contribute to the overall air quality and efficiency these buildings require.”

The annual AHR Expo for Zehnder, like it is for many companies with booths set up on event’s expansive show floor, proves a vital chance to connect with customers and prospects.

“It’s a great showcase,” Bolger said. “It’s fantastic to see what everyone else is doing. It’s nice to talk to people to see where we should be going and what’s working. Even with competitors, it’s nice to sit down with them and chat about the industry.

“It’s exciting to see that there’s a lot of interest in what we’re doing (with energy efficient products). It’s something that needs to be addressed – whether it’s indoor air quality or energy efficiency. … Hopefully, products like ours and competitors’ can contribute to that a little bit.”
