Solar carport to power architectural firm's office in Syracuse

King + King Architects is installing a "solar" carport that will power its Syracuse, N.Y., office, as well provide covered parking for its employees and visitors.

The roof of the 12,600-square-foot carport directly across from the firm's office is covered with 540 solar panels that the firm says will generate up to 300,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, reports That's enough juice to provide up to 95 percent of King + King's electrical needs, CEO and managing partner Kirk Narburgh said.

Taitem Engineering, of Ithaca, is installing the carport, which will be the first of its kind in Syracuse. Narburgh said it will be fully operational by Jan. 1.

The carport will accommodate 75 vehicles. 

Partner-in-Charge Peter King said building a solar carport was part of the firm's plans when it moved into the century-old former industrial building on the city's Near Westside in January 2009.

The firm's building received platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program in 2011. Its roof has an older set of solar panels that have been providing 2 to 3 percent of the firm's electrical needs.

The carport will cost $650,000 but is expected to save the firm up to $40,000 a year in electrical costs, King said. The state Energy Research and Development Authority provided a $91,500 "NY-Sun" grant, Narburgh said.
