Recycling on rise at multifamily residences in Atlanta

All around Atlanta, new buildings are taking shape.

As people want to live inside the city’s perimeter with easy access to transit, fresh food and more sustainable living, most of the buildings are multifamily units and more than half of Atlanta’s residents reside in one, according to the city’s Office of Resilience.

And it’s expected that interest in multifamily structures will only continue to grow in the coming years.

Atlanta’s multifamily residents will be getting greener, thanks to the enforcement of an ordinance requiring that all multifamily buildings with six or more units offer recycling services to their residents. Multifamily properties around the city are being required to set up separate recycling service for their residents.

Starting a new recycling program is not as simple as putting a few blue recycling bins out near the current trash Dumpsters. Awareness and education are key, officials said.

For example, multifamily recycling initiatives should include a clearly identified recycling area with labeling to explain what items can and can’t be recycled. Designate an internal recycling ambassador to encourage 100 percent participation in the complex’s recycling program.

Recycling right is critical. Initially, focus on the basics; flattened boxes, paper, cans, bottles and plastic containers.

No plastic bags, no food items and no Styrofoam should be collected. Plastic bags are the No. 1 contaminant. They pose a special problem at the recycling center by getting caught in machinery.

Recycling is on the rise in Atlanta, but city officials said they need all citizens to be engaged to meet the city’s goal of 90 percent waste diversion by 2020.
