Geothermal heat pumps gaining ground on efficiency

Builders looking for ways to cut energy use can simply look down for an answer. Geothermal heating and cooling – which uses the energy of the earth rather than fossil fuels.

Geothermal heating works because the earth absorbs about 48 percent of the sun’s energy, leaving a fairly constant underground temperature. Geothermal technology uses this stable temperature to transfer heat to and from the earth, instead of using the air in the more common air-source heat pump systems.

At the 2015 Greenbuild Expo, Brian Urlaub, commercial sales manager forEnertech Global, discussed some of the latest developments in geothermal technology.

One of the Enertech brands, GeoComfort, launched the new VS series model used in commercial settings. The unit is almost 200 pounds light than the company’s previous series model, which makes it smaller, lighter, quieter and more efficient.

“For commercial spaces, we're always looking to make our units smaller because we don't get much square footage,” Urlaub said. “Our vertical compact units are very compact and have a very small foot print and have the highest efficiency in their class.”

Enertech is seeing the use of geothermal in all sectors of the commercial market, including schools and other institutions. Much of the interest among building owners is that longevity of geothermal systems, which have a lifespan of up to 50 years, Urlaub said.

Interest also has spiked among retail businesses and hotels, which are using the technology for pool and laundry water heating needs.
