D.C. mixed-use building earns platinum honor

Wall Development Group’s innovative mixed-use project in Northeast Washington, D.C., has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s highest honor.

The facility received platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), according to a press release. Platinum is awarded for a project based on the environmental and energy efficiency considerations of LEED, the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings.

"The work of innovative building projects such as 1115 H St. NE is a fundamental driving force in transforming the way buildings are built, designed and operated," said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of the USGBC. "Buildings that achieve LEED certification are lowering carbon emissions, creating a healthier environment and reducing operating costs while prioritizing sustainable practices."

Wall Development Group's new construction at 1115 H St. achieved LEED platinum certification by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

The project includes residential and retail space located in the booming H Street NE corridor of Washington, D.C., where more than 1,500 units of new housing have been delivered or in the pipeline for completion in the next few years.

"In such a prospering area, it is easy to merely push for a building that yields maximum financial return, but 1115 H St. instead pursued a path achieving the triple bottom line of social, environmental and financial returns," Wall Development's Stan Wall said.

In additional to achieving LEED platinum certification, 25 percent of the residential units in the project were set aside as affordable units and the project achieved significant participation by local and small businesses.
