4 ways to upgrade with clean energy technologies

One of the best ways to protect a home purchase — whether single- or multi-family — is to invest in smart renovations. Thanks to new technology, there are a number of improvement options. From advanced heating and cooling to energy efficient appliances, these technologies can keep costs low and, in some instances, even improve the value of your home.

Here are four clean energy upgrades to consider from the U.S. Department of Energy. 

Solar panels

A study from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that home purchasers are consistently willing to shell out more money for homes that boast their own solar photovoltaic (PV) energy systems — representing a premium that adds about $15,000 to the value of a home.

With more than a million residential solar installations now nationwide, it will be increasingly important for real estate professionals to assess the full value of solar modifications to homes on the market. The U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative has developed an array of real estate resources designed to help homeowners and appraisers factor the full value of solar energy into their decision-making.

Connected thermostats

Given the ubiquity of today’s smartphones, it’s little wonder that many consumers are also clamoring for smart home technology, including connected thermostats. The technology allows homeowners to monitor and control their home’s heating and cooling remotely. A recent consumer study found that 12 percent of renovated homes include upgraded thermostats in their design.

The average American household spends around half its annual energy bill on heating and cooling. Connected thermostats automatically adjust temperature points — even when nobody is home — and hold the potential for enormous energy and cost savings. 


With consumer demand high for green products and services, the National Association of Home Builders has found that a majority of builders include efficiency measures in the design of new structures. Ninety-five percent of them include energy efficient windows.

Upgrading the efficiency of your windows can be a strong strategy for making your home more comfortable and cost-effective. Some of the measures you can take include adding storm windows, caulking, and using window coverings.

LED lighting

Can saving energy and money be as simple as screwing in a light bulb? The energy and cost savings from LED bulbs make them an obvious upgrade to consider for your home. LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than traditional incandescent lighting. They’re also more durable.
